Gary Ray Bowles – Rollin’ on a River of Fear

Gary Ray Bowles was convicted of murdering six men in Florida and Georgia. He was sentenced to death by lethal injection and currently resides on Florida Death Row. His crime spree lasted under a year, beginning in early 1994, and ending on 16 November 1994, when he was arrested for the murder of Walter Hinton.

In late 2008, I became interested in Gary Ray Bowles due to the fact that he was the very first serial killer to make contact with me. Of course, it was from behind bars, thank God! I had always taken the initiative to make contact first with all of the serial killers I have interviewed, but this offender was different.

Gary had seen me being interviewed on the Montel Williams show. He then wrote me a letter explaining who he was, and why he was on Florida’s Death Row. He was interested to have his biography written before being executed and this was his reason for contacting me.

I looked up his crimes. I asked him to describe the people whom he had killed and why. I asked him for his legal documents, which he willingly sent to me. In piecing together my research on Gary, along with my correspondence with him, it was not difficult to read between the lines. There is no way, I thought, that this man could have met and killed six homosexual ‘child molesters’ – his term for these men – in such a short period of time. I felt that quite possibly these men may not have been child molesters at all.

Back then, I explained to him that I did not write books, but promised to put him in touch with a good author, if I found one. I did, however, fly out to interview him for a potential show. This was a two-hour, face-to-face interview on a Thursday; the second interview was scheduled for a Tuesday.

He agreed to my interviews, and he also put me on his visiting list. Interviewing someone for media purposes and then having a personal visit is a ‘no-no’ in almost every correctional facility in America, but I had promised him that I would try to come in on that personal visit after the first on-camera interview. I explained I would try to get out there during the early part of the summer of 2009. We corresponded frequently, and I felt that I had got to know him very well. I didn’t know whether he was gay or straight; I just knew that he had killed six homosexual men.

Gary insisted that they had all been child molesters and this is why he had killed them. He was a male prostitute himself, not my usual type of serial killer, but still a real, live one who was admitting his guilt. So Gary Ray Bowles was just who I needed for a TV documentary and he had literally dropped into my lap.

As March 2009 approached, I asked Gary to sign a document permitting me to interview with him on camera.
